Blossom Dearie was part of the New York bebopper scene that often met at Gil Evans' apartment, was part of the social circles where the "Birth of the Cool" began to develop, and at the same time was a fixture in the jazz clubs of the 1940s. Legendary jazz producer and founder of Verve, Norman Granz, heard Blossom sing in Paris and offered her a contract. She returned to New York and recorded her debut album, produced by Norman Granz in 1956. The LP focuses on Blossom as a chanteuse and pianist. With her girlish voice, which contrasted delightfully with her excellent piano playing, Blossom Dearie immediately stood out from all her peers. On her untitled first Verve album from 1957, Blossom dove deep into the repertoire of the Great American Songbook, but also presented a few songs sung in French - as a tribute to her temporary adopted home of Paris.
