The feeling of hearing familiar music anew is usually pleasant, so that one likes to let the proverbial 'earworm' drill into the auditory canals. This, of course, also applies to composers, who at all times picked up melodies from the street with folk songs and dances in the best sense of the word, in order to process them in their own works. The Americans are no exception and diligently plow the musical roots of their territories, as titles like "Mexican Rhapsody", "Kentucky Mountains" and "Savannah River Holiday" announce.
Quiet tones are not called for here, as the "Hi-Fi Fiesta" is celebrated with orchestral crashes that emphasize its close relationship to film music. Athletic string sounds, coupled with sharply shot broadsides of brass and rolling timpani thunder, are as much a feature of these pieces, which foam with energy, as lyrical songlike parts that soar into ethereal spheres of violin harmonics ("Mexican Rhapsody"). The Eastmen-Rochester Orchestra, which with Robert McBride and Ron Nelson pays homage to two eleven of the Eastmen School of Music of the same name, does the best service to the assembled composers' guild through spirited access and maximum sound yield.
