Popis
Brad Mehldau's "Jacob's Ladder" contains new compositions, the content of which is marked by reflection on the Holy Scriptures and the search for God. Musically, the new album was inspired by the prog rock that Mehldau adored as a youth, and which served as a gateway to the form of fusion that eventually led him to discover jazz. Guest musicians include Mehldau's labelmates Chris Thile and Cécile McLorin Salvant as well as Mark Guiliana, Becca Stevens and Joel Frahm, among others. The song is based on a rearrangement of the interpolation of part of the Rush classic "Tom Sawyer." "We are born close to God, but the more we mature, the more consistently we move further and further away from Him because of our respective egos," Mehldau explains. "Jabob's Ladder" begins with a child's voice in that place near God. Then there is a shift into the world of action and effect. God is always near, but during our discoveries and conquests, and the joys and sufferings they entail, we may lose sight of Him. He does, however, as in Jacob's dream, set a ladder before us that we climb, in his direction, to find reconciliation with ourselves, and to sew up all worldly wounds so that they may eventually heal. The record ends with my idea of heaven, seen again through the eyes of a child - his child, in eternal grace, in ecstasy. "The musical guide is prog," Mehldau continues. "Prog - progressive rock was the music of my childhood, before I discovered jazz. Prog went well with the fantasy and science fiction books by C.S. Lewis, Madeleine L'Engle and other authors that I was reading at that time, at the age of ten to twelve. Prog opened the door for me to the fusion of Miles Davis, of Weather Report, the Mahavishnu Orchestra and other groups, which in turn pointed the way to much more jazz. The parallel for me between jazz and prog was the expanded scope of expression, and, compared to the rock music I'd known up to that point, large-scale ambition." "The prog rock of Rush, Gentle Giant and Emerson, Lake and Palmer hints at the compositional, conceptual and emotional range of the genre on my new album more than anything else. The influence of these and other prog bands on younger groups continues, who in turn add prog impulses to the venues of hard rock and screaming math metal. I'm thinking of bands like Periphery, whose music can be found on my new album - not least in terms of the bellowing vocals in the track "Lord and Servant." Still, I tried to avoid the direct tribute approach in all of the new songs. Instead, I opted for small quotes or reworking motifs in some of the tracks." Although Brad Mehldau is known primarily as a jazz composer and improviser, he has released a number of albums that play outside his proper musical home. "Largo," produced by Jon Brion and released in 2001, thrives on layered textures and large-scale orchestration. Woodwind and brass ensembles are featured in quite a few pieces, while Mehldau also focused the album on powerful percussion. "Highway Rider," Mehldau's second collaboration with Brion, was released in 2010. The album features recordings by his trio, which includes Jeff Ballard (drums) and Larry Grenadier (bass), as well as contributions from drummer Matt Chamberlain, Joshua Redman, and a chamber orchestra conducted by Dan Coleman. Mehldau also single-handedly orchestrated and arranged the album's 15 pieces for the ensemble "Mehliana - Taming The Dragon," his 2014 collaboration with Mark Giuliana, was recorded by him on Fender Rhodes and synthesizers, and by Giuliana on drums and effects. The album includes 12 original compositions - six by Mehldau, another six by Giuliana and Mehldau. in 2019, "Finding Gabriel" was released, which Mehldau recorded on piano, synthesizer, percussion, Fender Rhodes, but also with the benefit of his voice. His guest musicians on the album include Ambrose Akinmusire, Sara Caswell, Kurt Elling, Joel Frahm, Mark Guiliana, Gabriel Kahane and Becca Stevens.
