For his 75th birthday, Paul Kuhn had offered himself and his audience a very special sounding present: With 'Young At Heart', awarded the Quarterly Prize 2 / 2003 by the jury of the German Record Critics, he presented himself in the company of a band he has chosen as his favorite musicians, Paul Kuhn & The Best: His trio, a five-piece horn section and guest vocalist Greetje Kauffeld put together a program of sizzling and swinging jazz numbers and intimate ballads that shimmered with verve from original compositions to evergreens by Rodgers / Hart or Isham Jones to Bossa and Monk. Three years later, Kuhn now crowns the abundance of his current productions with a live edition of the And The Best project. The grandiose line-up, in the golden mean between intimate chamber jazz and big band, now appears slightly varied in terms of personnel and shows itself in the recording of 3sat in exuberant playing mood, rich in facets and combinations, infected by the unclouded and youthful verve of their leader and presenter on the keys. During the almost two-hour show, Paul Kuhn and his fellow performers unfold a captivating spectrum of wit, charm, effervescence, swing, virtuoso skill and sovereign accompanying artistry. The show is rounded off by a very special treat: for all those who want to relive Paul Kuhn's career from a very personal perspective, the DVD contains valuable and entertaining additional material in the form of Tim Gorbauch's documentary 'Paul Kuhn - A German Story'. In Gorbauch's impressive 45-minute portrait, the viewer can experience the various stages of the career of the 'man on the piano' up close.
