Popis
According to his first biographer, Johann Nikolaus Forkel, Johann Sebastian Bach possessed the extraordinary ability to combine organ stops in completely unusual ways, astonishing the organists and organ builders of his time. However, very few accounts have survived describing how he actually made these tonal decisions. A valuable source of information is Georg Friedrich Kauffmann’s *Harmonische Seelenlust* (1733–1740), an extensive collection of chorale preludes that exhibits striking parallels with the third part of the *Clavier-Übung* (1739)—to the point of almost appearing to be its model—and contains registrations so original and bold that they are reminiscent of the style described by Forkel. Having already made a name for himself with the award-winning *Bach Mirrored* (German Record Critics’ Award), organist Maurizio Croci now draws on the sonic possibilities of the historic Treutmann organ in Grauhof (1737) to present a new interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach’s masterpiece. Building on Georg Friedrich Kauffmann’s stop combinations, this recording places the stop combinations at the center of the expressive interpretation and opens up a new perspective for the listener.
