John Coltrane: Blue Train (Limited Edition) (Blue Vinyl) (140 g) (LP)

John William Coltrane is considered today to be one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz. But when he first performed as part of Dizzy Gillespie’s orchestra in the late 1940s, no one would have imagined that this shy young man in his early twenties would become an iconic musician within a decade. This album showcases John Coltrane at the height of his solo career, although there is, of course, even more significant music by him. On September 15, 1957, John Coltrane entered the studio in Rudy Van Gelder’s living room in Hackensack, New Jersey, and recorded his first major masterpiece: “Blue Train.” It would remain the legendary saxophonist’s only album as bandleader for Blue Note—a rousing five-track record, driven by the blues of the title track, performed by a dynamic six-piece ensemble consisting of Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on double bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums.
