“I studied and learned some of the late piano pieces as a young man, out of love and passion. But even back then, I knew I would have to wait to perform them. These are his final thoughts as a relatively old man. And they are so autumnal, so full of resignation…” (Sir András Schiff) In Brahms’s late works, we encounter music born of memories and subtle allusions. In these intimate piano pieces, every gesture carries the experience of a lifetime, condensed into just a few measures: songs without words, mental images that seem to emerge from the silence and then sink back into it. Here, Sir András Schiff brings together *Albumblatt* (an early work that was only rediscovered in 2012), the Piano Pieces, Op. 76, the Fantasies, Op. 116, the Intermezzi, Op. 117, and the Piano Pieces, Op. 118 and Op. 119, into a recital that traces the increasingly introspective path of Brahms’s final decades. Aside from a few dramatic outbursts and occasionally even humorous pieces, we encounter primarily dialogues with memory—music of extraordinary concentration in which “the soft and the softest tones dominate,” as Schiff puts it. Recorded in the Hermann J. Abs Chamber Music Hall in Bonn on a Blüthner grand piano from the 1850s, Schiff’s interpretation brings to the fore the subtle architecture and poetic intimacy of these predominantly late masterpieces. The album builds on Schiff’s recent explorations of Brahms’s works: the piano concertos with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (2021) (“Schiff and the orchestra breathe air and vitality into these pieces”—The New York Times) as well as the clarinet sonatas with Jörg Widmann (2020) The booklet accompanying the 2-CD album contains an introductory essay by Peter Gülke (1934–2026) as well as a personal foreword and detailed commentary on each individual work by Sir András Schiff. All texts are included in both German and English.
