The first performance of Handel's Ottone took place at the King's Theatre Haymarket in London on January 12, 1723. Handel had completed the opera the previous summer. His first draft was available on August 10, but it had to be revised several times before the first performance could take place. The problems were due to his ensemble, composed exclusively of celebrated performers, some of whom expressed dissatisfaction with the nature and character of their roles. Handel had been fortunate in being able to engage several outstanding Italian singers for the Royal Academy of Music, which had been promoting Italian opera in London since 1720, and his casting for Ottone included three of them - the soprano Margherita Durastanti as Gismonda, the famous alto castrato Senesino in the title role, and bass Giuseppe Boschi - along with English contralto Anastasia Robinson (in the role of Matilda), alto castrato Gaetano Berenstatt as Adelberto, and as Princess Teofane, soprano Francesca Cuzzoni, the latest discovery from Italy. Handel's orchestration for Ottone was quite modest, especially compared to the exotic timbres and additional onstage instrumental ensemble he employed a year later in Julius Caesar. But the simple orchestration (just strings, oboes and bassoon, plus recorders for Ottone's wonderful evening song 'Deh! non dir!) allowed the composer to concentrate on melodic elegance rather than crowd-pleasing musical fireworks.
