Chick Corea: Septet

In addition to his achievements as an improvising pianist, Chick Corea was always interested in written music, both as a composer and as a player. His album "Lyric Suite for Sextet" was nominated for a Classical Grammy Award in 1984. An early, decisive step in this direction was the composition "Septet", which was commissioned by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center for the New World Festival in Miami in 1982 "Septet" is a multi-faceted piece of chamber music in five movements. Chick suggested that his inspiration was to be found in Stravinsky, the French Impressionists and composers of the Viennese School. "Writing the septet was my first venture as a composer to create a through-composed piece of this length and complexity. I must say I had great fun doing it. I began with no idea of the form, just the idea that I would improvise the form as I wrote.
