Popis
By the late 1960s, The Who had long since established their reputation: they were considered one of the greatest live bands in the world. So it’s no surprise that, half a century later, this album ranks No. 1 on the list of the best live albums of all time: The Who—Live At Leeds.
The New York Times described the concert—recorded in February 1970 on the University of Leeds campus—even back then as “the best live rock album of all time.” Just look at the song selection: In the northern English city, The Who even played a surprising track like “Young Man Blues,” composed by jazz veteran Mose Allison. They also performed a cover of Sonny Boy Williamson’s “Eyesight to the Blind,” interspersed among early hits like “I Can’t Explain” and “Happy Jack,” as well as an extended version of their then-current song “Tommy.” The closing medley—including “My Generation” and “Magic Bus”—served as the perfect finale for Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon.
“We hardly added any new tracks to the recording afterward,” Daltrey once said. “Strictly speaking, we actually had to take things out… especially the audience, because otherwise you wouldn’t have heard enough of the music.” That pretty much says it all.
The Who’s first live album, recorded on February 14, 1970, in the cafeteria at the University of Leeds and released on May 11, 1970. *
* 1995 remix plus 8 bonus tracks.
