McCoy Tyner : Time For Tyner (LP)

For his third Blue Note album, recorded in 1968, the pianist took a different direction than before, assembling a quartet without horn. The piano and vibraphone-led ensemble lends ethereal textures to the album throughout, but the musicians still deliver a stirring and rousing performance. The 6-song set begins with three extended Tyner originals and ends with three radically renewed standards - a quartet version of "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," followed by a trio version of "Surrey with the Fringe on Top," before Tyner closes the album with a stunning solo piano performance of "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face."
