When Johnny Griffin recorded his second album with Hank Mobley and John Coltrane for the Blue Note label in April 1957, the three tenor sax giants were all still at the beginning of their solo careers. The album, which initially bore the dry title "Johnny Griffin, Vol. 2" before being reissued under the more apt title "A Blowing Session", is, according to AllMusic, "one of the best hard bop jam sessions ever recorded".
