Rediscovered: Friedrich Schneider's Last Judgement. A forgotten great oratorio has been rediscovered in Leipzig. Gregor Meyer conducts the GewandhausChor and the camerata lipsiensis in Friedrich Schneider's "The Last Judgement". The composer, pianist, organist and Anhalt-Dessau court conductor Friedrich Schneider was one of the most creative and productive minds on the Central German music scene in the first half of the 19th century and is unfortunately a forgotten figure today. "Das Weltgericht" was once one of the most famous German oratorios, making euphoric headlines everywhere at the time of its composition and triggering storms of enthusiasm among audiences. The libretto was written by August Apel, based on the biblical account of the Last Judgement in Matthew 24-25 and the Book of Revelation. There is no plot in the strict sense; the characters are rather biblical messengers, telling us about heaven, hell and earth. The oratorio stands between the Classical and Romantic periods; it was often performed and then long forgotten. The conductor Gregor Meyer wants to put the work of Friedrich Schneider, who was active in Leipzig at the time, up for discussion again. A source-critical edition of his work is helping him to do so.
