Popis
When Igor Stravinsky complied with the request of the brilliant impresario Serge Diaghilev in 1919 to set Léonide Massine's ballet Pulcinella to music based on works by the Neapolitan composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, he could not have known that only half of the works selected for the arrangement were actually by Pergolesi. Among other things, he drew on a print of 12 trio sonatas which had been published in London in 1780 under the author's name Pergolesi. It was not until the 1950s that the true composer of the delightful Pulcinella originals was discovered in Italian manuscripts: Domenico Gallo. However, the mystery continues here too, as very little is known about the composer and violinist, who was born in Venice around 1730 (according to Fétis in his Biographie universelle of 1866). The present trio sonatas were probably composed between 1750 and 1760, in a period that is one of the most colorful and diverse periods in European music history. With their lively rhythms and exuberant melodies, they were bound to inspire Stravinsky. The four musicians of the Parnassi musici make them a pure joy to listen to.
