Trumpeter Clark Terry plays the flugelhorn on this 1958 release, which attracted a lot of attention because of one important, flattering detail: Monk appears here as a sideman. The other accompanying musicians are not to be sneezed at either: Cannonball Adderley's frequent bassist Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones, who Bill Evans raved was his favorite drummer. At the time, Clark was at the height of his career, frequently sharing the stage with Count Basie and Duke Ellington. AllMusic commented that "In Orbit" was, true to its title, "a spirited, boppish date". Monk fans will enjoy the slightly more challenging piece "Let's Cool One" (the pianist's only composition here). Other highlights include Terry's silky smooth "One Foot in the Gutter" and the wistful "Argentia". Craft Recordings announces the final batch of 2024 reissues in its Original Jazz Classics series, popular with collectors and critics alike.
