In "A Sun That Never Sets", Ralph Alessi expands his band into a quintet by adding trombonist Joseph Alessi to the band. Together with Matt Mitchell, John Hébert and Ches Smith, he unfolds 11 compositions that combine complex songwriting and improvisational freedom in a close dialog between trumpet and trombone. Between angular structures, improvised outbursts and contemplative moments, the album showcases a unique style of playing that is supported by constantly inventive interplay and a great richness of timbre.
