C. P.E. Bach's six string symphonies from 1773 are among the most original and technically demanding symphonic string music of the second half of the 18th century. Explicitly encouraged to do so by his patron, the Handel admirer and Mozart patron Gottfried van Swieten, the composer gave free rein to his "original genius" and his avant-garde love of experimentation. His symphonies for strings seem to be based more on his free piano fantasies than on the symphonies of his contemporaries. No more ideal interpreters for these extremely ingenious works could be imagined than Café Zimmermann.
