Even though it was to take more than a year before the first opera performance, 1719 marked the official birth of the Royal Academy of Music, Handel's first London opera company, to which we owe masterpieces such as Giulio Cesare, Ottone or Rodelinda. In addition to Handel as musical director, two other well-known exponents of Italian opera seria, Attilio Ariosti and Giovanni Battista Bononcini, worked as house composers until 1723. The mezzo-soprano Eva Zaïcik, together with the ensemble Le Consort, presents music by the three masters for the Royal Academy of Music, thus reminding us of the high musical level of that time.
