Klezmatics: We Were Made For These Times

With "We Were Made For These Times", the Klezmatics are celebrating their 40th anniversary as a band - and at the same time releasing an album that speaks directly to the present. For four decades, the Grammy Award-winning band has combined Yiddish musical tradition with political awareness, cultural responsibility and an unmistakable sound that fuses klezmer with punk energy, jazz improvisation, gospel and global rhythms. The new album does not see klezmer as a nostalgic archive, but as a living form of expression that creates strength, solidarity and resilience. In times of social tensions, global migration movements and public debates about belonging, the Klezmatics focus on the historical task of Jewish music: to demand humanity, strengthen community and formulate hope. The songs range from protest and workers' songs to spiritual pieces and at the same time celebrate joie de vivre, faith and cultural memory. Texts by Woody Guthrie, Holly Near, Dovid Edelstadt or Chaim Zhitlovsky meet new interpretations and international guests - including Sofía Rei, Janis Siegel, Joshua Nelson, La Manga, William Parker, James Brandon Lewis and Enver Izmaylov. At the heart of the album is the title track, inspired by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés' message: We are made for these times. The album reaffirms what the Klezmatics have stood for for 40 years: Music as a tool for courage, dignity and communal future.
