Popis
AVID Jazz continues its series of four classic albums with a remastered 2CD release of Nina Simone, complete with original artwork, liner notes and personnel details (where available).
We in the music trade are often faced with the problem of where to classify an artist. For many music fans, even trying to categorize a musician is the real problem! "Let the music speak for itself," they all cry. If only life were that simple! Imagine walking into a record store and everything is arranged alphabetically. You'd have to dig through a lot of stuff that starts with "s" before you get to Nina Simone. In a jazz section, at least you know where you're going to find John Coltrane or Miles Davis. And so we get closer to our problem: where do we rank Nina Simone? This is a great artist who essentially comes from classical, gospel, and blues, and yet in our selection she undoubtedly sings in jazz. A bit like Ray Charles, we thought, who crosses many genres! So it's jazz. Here we present four of Nina's earliest albums, a mix of studio and live recordings. Her style was certainly more jazz at this early stage, based on her gospel and blues background, before approaching soul and even pop later in her career.
