Popis
An audiophile LP transfer for a highly acclaimed recording of a monumental tribute from one great artist to another.
Arvo Pärt, probably the most frequently performed living composer, was inspired to compose Lamentate in 2002 by a work by sculptor Anish Kapoor. Its title, Marsyas, refers to the satyr of classical legend who challenged the god Apollo to a musical contest and was skinned alive for his arrogance. Kapoor's sculpture, which occupies the vast space of the Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern in London, evokes the Promethean audacity of humanity in abstract form, and in response Pärt created his largest instrumental music work commissioned by the Tate.
When he first saw the sculpture, Pärt said, "my first impression was that I was a living being standing in front of my own body and dead, as if in a time loop perspective, simultaneously in the future and in the present." Suddenly I found myself in a situation in which my life appeared in a different light Lamentate is laid out in 10 movements over a period of 40 minutes and is not a rite of mourning for a specific person, but focuses on more general concerns.
'Death and suffering are issues that affect every person born into this world,' notes Part. 'That's why I wrote a lament - not for the dead, but for the living, who have to deal with these issues themselves. A lament for us, who do not find it easy to deal with the pain and hopelessness of the world Pärt thus contributes to a tradition of semi-sacred or even secular liturgies of mourning, remembrance and transfiguration, from Brahms' German Requiem to Richard Strauss' Four Last Songs and John Adams' Von der Seelenwanderung. This version, produced in Spain and previously released on CD and other digital formats, received high praise from critics for the dedication in the performance and the depth of the technical realization, which is further emphasized by the new transfer to the analog format of the record.
- The LP version of a very successful CD recording of Lamentate by Arvo Pärt, performed by Spanish pianist Pedro Piquero and the Orquesta de Extremadura under the direction of Álvaro Albiach.
- "Death and suffering are themes that affect every person born into this world. The way in which individuals deal (or don't deal) with these issues determines their attitude to life, whether consciously or unconsciously ... This is the theme that underlies my composition Lamentate. Accordingly, I have written a lament - not for the dead, but for the living, who have to deal with these issues themselves." This is how the composer Arvo Pärt described his work for piano and orchestra Lamentate. - The Psalm for string orchestra and the Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten can also be heard here.
