John Eliot Gardiner celebrates his 80th birthday on April 20, 2023. In addition to the 64-CD box set, two important albums will also be released on vinyl handel's Water Music and Purcell's King Arthur. When this album of Handel's Water Music was recorded in 1980, the English Baroque Soloists ensemble had been formed only two years earlier. John Eliot Gardiner had first founded the Monteverdi Choir in 1964 and the Monteverdi Orchestra in 1968, playing modern instruments. In the late 1970s, the orchestra switched to period instruments and became the English Baroque Soloists. The first concert under the new name took place in 1977 at the Innsbruck Early Music Festival. The Water Music Suites is one of the first recordings by the English Baroque Soloists. Gardiner's aesthetic consisted of Accuracy, instrumental perfection, intonation, and dynamics - it was a matter of dismantling any preconceptions there might have been about the Baroque at the time.
