In 1991, the world's most famous trumpeter could look back on five decades of musical evolution - his own and that of the world around him. Miles Davis had found ways to combine jazz with classical ideas, then later R&B, rock and funk, producing hybrids that shaped the course of popular music and became his legend. In 1985, he left Columbia after thirty years and signed with Warner Bros. Records, a label that was riding high with best-selling artists like Madonna, Van Halen and Prince, with whom he shared a mutual admiration and friendship.
Miles Davis' lifelong love of France is well documented, and in July 1991 he was made a Knight of the French Legion of Honor. Davis received the award from French Culture Minister Jack Lang, who described him as, "The Picasso of jazz." A few days earlier, he played this electrifying set with the Miles Davis Group at the Vienne Jazz Festival. He passed away two months later in September 1991.
Miles Davis' performance at Jazz a Vienne on July 1, 1991 became one of his last live performances before he passed away on September 28, 1991. This previously unreleased set includes two songs written by Prince, "Penetration" and "Jailbait". The package includes liner notes by music historian, journalist and producer Ashley Kahn, with art design by Bruno Tilley.
Miles Davis' performance at Jazz a Vienne on 1 July 1991 became one of his last live performances before he died on 28. September 1991. While highlights of the Concert have been released over the years, "Merci, Miles" marks the first time that the complete Performance in its original order (for CD and digital) and also in its original order (for CD and digital), and also the first time the entire performance is available on LP. The Package includes liner notes by music historian, journalist and producer and producer Ashley Kahn, with art design by Bruno Tilley, plus photos and memorabilia from the performance and a fold-out poster Performance and a fold-out poster. "Merci Miles! Live at Vienne" will be released as a 2CD and as a 2LP.
