Richard Strauss' "Arabella" is a lyrical comedy that tells of notes and obsessions in a society whose old-fashioned values are crumbling. Gambling addiction has driven the family of cavalry officer Waldner to financial ruin, and their only hope of salvation is to marry their daughter Arabella into a wealthy family. Strauss' orchestral opulence combined with the Viennese ambience of the time meant that Arabella was often perceived as a cheerful comedy of errors, but Tobias Kratzer's multi-faceted production also explores the discord between the characters and highlights the tensions that connect 19th century Vienna with the present day. "Arabella" was the acclaimed prelude to Tobias Kratzer's Strauss triptych at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in March 2023. Sara Jakubiak, Elena Tsallagova, Doris Soffel, Robert Watson, Russell Braun and Albert Pesendorfer can be seen in the leading roles. The choir and orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin under the direction of Sir Donald Runnicles.
