This box set with all of George Enescu's solo piano works spans an exciting arc from his early years in Vienna and Paris, where he was inspired by Brahmsian influences and French late Romanticism, audible above all in his Impromptus, to the brilliantly lively 3rd Piano Sonata. Whether in the Impromptus, the eloquent character pieces or the impressive 1st Piano Sonata - Enescu remains, in Pablo Casal's words, "the greatest musical phenomenon since Mozart". His unique musical language encompasses both Bach and the enduring vitality and melancholy of the Romanian folk music from which he came.
