Barbara Strozzi: A portrait in Five Acts

The Venetian Barbara Strozzi did not have to emancipate herself in order to find recognition as an artist in general and a composer in particular. And this despite the fact that she - the illegitimate daughter of a servant and her master - should actually have been happy to have become "something" at all, according to our ideas. But her father, himself a writer and witty in the true sense of the word, adopted his daughter and made sure she received the education she deserved. The exceptionally talented girl did the rest herself. The worthy pupil of the famous Francesco Cavalli could even afford to publish her works under her own name - a permanent fixture in the cultural life of her home town, which obviously took great pleasure in the extraordinary emotional worlds of this intimate music.
