In spring 2013, Daptone Records had just announced the upcoming release of "Give The People What They Want", the new album by Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, when Sharon Jones was diagnosed with cancer. The planned release and accompanying tour were immediately put on hold - from now on all efforts were focused solely on her treatment and recovery. It fills us with joy and relief to announce that today, thanks to a successful operation, ongoing treatment and the love and unwavering support of her friends, family and fans, we can announce Sharon Jones' return to the stage. She has been touring the globe with her band for over ten years, thrilling audiences with explosive live performances and her raw, unaffected studio recordings. While other artists have surrendered to the ups and downs of the zeitgeist sharon Jones & The Dap Kings have bypassed the fast lane of hypes and hits to reach the hearts and hips of an ever-growing, loyal fan base with their heartfelt rhythm and soul, bypassing fleeting trends and fads. "Give The People What They Want" has everything it takes to become not only a cult album by an extremely productive band, but a permanent fixture in the canon of soul music. The album begins with "Retreat!", an uptempo stomper with a stormy, unholy arrangement, heats up the mood further with the anthem "Stranger To My Happiness", which is reminiscent of the classic Detroit sound, before the feel-good anthem "We Get Along" guides the listener back into calmer realms.
