Popis
Presented here is the complete original album Coltrane Plays The Blues, a thematic LP consisting of six blues-based tunes. Pianist McCoy Tyner plays on "Blues To Bechet" and "Blues To You," reducing the band to a trio on these tracks.
Another track recorded during this session and four additional blues from the same period, with Coltrane as the only horn, have been added as bonuses.
Coltrane's sessions for Atlantic in late October 1960 were productive and provided the material for the albums "My Favourite Things," "Coltrane Plays The Blues," and "Coltrane's Sound." "My Favourite Things" should be the most remembered and influential of these, while Coltrane Plays The Blues was not as famous or daring in terms of material, it is still a powerful session.
As for the phrase "plays the blues": the title is not so much an indicator that the tunes are conventional blues (which they are not). It's more the indicative bluesy sensibility, whether he's playing muscular sax or, on "Blues to Bechet" and "Mr. Syms," the (then) more unusual sounding soprano sax. Elvin Jones, who actually hadn't been in Coltrane's band long, breaks out on the faster numbers, such as "Blues to You" and "Mr. Day."
