Eastern Rebellion: Eastern Rebellion

The largely overlooked pianist and composer Cedar Walton (1934–2013) recorded this wonderful debut album with his band Eastern Rebellion on December 10, 1975, in New York City. The album *Eastern Rebellion*, which is currently hard to find, features imaginative compositions by each member of the quartet, and this inspired modern jazz session stands as a fitting tribute to Cedar Walton. Joining Walton (piano) were George Coleman (tenor saxophone), Sam Jones (bass), and Billy Higgins (drums), who performed four of the band’s original compositions and a John Coltrane tune. Highlights include Walton’s 10-minute “Bolivia” and “Mode For Joe,” as well as a wonderful version of John Coltrane’s “Naima.” Cedar is perhaps one of the most underrated figures in jazz.
