Meszecsinka: Árnyék / Shadow

Long live Hungarian-Bulgarian cultural exchange! MESZECSINKA is one of the most exciting young world music ensembles in the Balkans. Translated from Bulgarian, the band’s name means “Little Moon.” With “Árnyék – Shadow,” the band—led by the charismatic singer and dancer ANNAMÁRIA OLÁH and the Bulgarian guitarist and pianist EMIL BILJARSZKI—presents an exciting new album. Released on CPL MUSIC. MESZECSINKA has been active for over ten years in various lineups and sings in seven languages: Hungarian, Spanish, Russian, Bulgarian, Finnish, Italian, and a language of their own invention. As early as 2011, MESZECSINKA won the independent Hungarian Folkbeat Award. Since then, they have performed regularly on stages large and small throughout Hungary, as well as at festivals across the Balkan states. ANNAMÁRIA OLÁH became interested in the rich folk tradition of her homeland at an early age and studied at the folk music department of the renowned Franz Liszt Academy, Hungary’s largest music university. In EMIL BILJARSZKI, she found a musical partner who shares her philosophy. Neither of them wants to be confined to narrow categories of what “world music” is supposed to be these days. MESZECSINKA achieved their international breakthrough with their 2016 album “Awake In A Dream,” which was produced with the support of Armenian guitarist and producer KAREN ARUTYUNYAN. In Hungary, the album won the national Grammy for Best World Music Album of the Year. The album “Stand Into The Deep” was released internationally by NORDIC NOTES in 2019.
