On their second joint album for Alpha Classics, Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Fazil Say showcase themselves not only as an extraordinary musical duo, but also as composers. Say’s sonata “Lost Screams”—written for Patricia Kopatchinskaja—opens the program: “It embodies the struggles, fears, and silent protests of our time,” explains Fazil Say. Patkop’s “UniSolo” rounds out the album: She wanted to create a musical process without knowing its outcome: “At the beginning, everything revolves around the note A—from there, situations developed that even surprised me,” explains Kopatchinskaja, summarizing: “Composing opens the ears and dispels any sense of awe. I feel freer and regard my works as living beings with whom I remain in dialogue throughout my life.” Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Fazil Say have also recorded Szymanowski’s magnificent “Myths” and Prokofiev’s Violin Sonata No. 1, which were composed between 1938 and 1946 amid the violence and fear of war and the Soviet regime— “Every note says something about the present,” Kopatchinskaja emphasizes.
