Reelroad: Past the Gates

True to the motto “From Russia with love!”, the Russian septet Reelroad has been enchanting its fans for four albums now. Although the large ensemble focuses on traditional instruments (the Russian zither, the zhaleika wind instrument, and the kaljuka overtone flute), but doesn’t sound old-fashioned at all, combines the danceability and zest for life of old Russian folk songs with modern elements, creating a kind of “power polka” that’s incredibly rhythmic and danceable. But the band’s repertoire isn’t limited to fast-paced numbers. They also conjure up soulful ballads with ease. “Past The Gates” sounds authentic and rousing and is a must-have at any village festival. An absolute must-listen for fans of Eastern European music!
