Mussorgsky’s poignant exploration of a tsar plagued by fear and paranoia takes on a special relevance in this much-admired production. The director has incorporated the work of photographer Dmitry Markov, who traveled throughout Russia and captured everyday life there; this presence highlights the inevitable contrasts between authoritarianism and the real Russia. The opera, which features an outstanding cast, is conducted by Vasily Petrenko—this marks his debut with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. The magazine *Opera* wrote that the premiere was a “brilliant start to the Holland Festival.”
