Lee Konitz: Motion (Acoustic Sounds) (180 g) (LP)

The album *Motion*, recorded in August 1961, is a wonderful example of how true masters of improvisation can abstract jazz standards with such imagination and artistry. The album truly lives up to its title, as the music that alto saxophonist Lee Konitz plays here with his trio partners is in constant motion. The lineup—which lacks a harmony instrument—gave Konitz plenty of space to showcase his lyrical phrasing, shaped by cool jazz, against the backdrop of Elvin Jones’ dynamic, polyrhythmic drumming and Sonny Dallas’ agile and unwavering walking bass lines.
