Philip Glass composed this work for Robert McDuffie in 2009. The soloist was interested in music that would serve as a companion piece to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Instead of the usual cadenza, Glass wrote a number of solo pieces which could be abstracted from the work. In the concerto they appear as a prelude to the first movement and three “songs” that precede each of the following three movements.
