Popis
The trio's masterful interplay, which relies on polished communication between the three of them and a refined sense of understatement, makes Fred Hersch's third recording for ECM an indispensable contribution to the piano trio canon. Together with Drew Gress on bass and Joey Baron on drums, two long-time companions who have been playing with him on and off since the late 80s and early 90s respectively, Hersch takes on a handful of 20th century compositions - from standards to less frequently played jazz tunes. There are also three original compositions, "I feel like you can really hear the history on this record," notes the pianist. "I hope people can feel the maturity of the interaction, the soundscape and the sensitivity in the playing." Fred's own pieces are captivating in their lyrical intensity, shining with sophisticated harmonies and interwoven counterpoint in "Plainsong", timeless melodic invention in the title track "The Surrounding Green" and irresistible Latin groove in "Anticipation". The trio's approach on Ornette Coleman's "Law Years" is a free swinging affair, while Egberto Gismonti's "Palhaço" is an elegant journey of thoughtful trio interaction. And in "Embraceable You" by the Gershwin brothers, the pianist and his accompanists shine with infectious nonchalance. The trio explores Charlie Haden's "The First Song" with great dedication to the haunting quality of the melancholy melody. The late bassist had been part of one of Fred's first studio dates in 1987, also with Baron on drums. Their deep connection to the song is palpable throughout and makes for a particularly rousing interpretation. "The Surrounding Green" was recorded at the Auditorio Stelio Molo in Lugano in May 2024 and produced by Manfred Eicher.
