Hal Ashby's 1971 film Harold and Maude was arguably Hollywood's first black comedy. With a plot revolving around a platonic love story between a teenager (Harold Chasen, played by Bud Cort) and an octogenarian (Dame Marjorie Chardin, played by Ruth Gordon), the film had its fair share of trouble. But 50 years after its theatrical release, it is a true cult classic. The film's success is due in no small part to its soundtrack, which consists entirely of songs by Cat Stevens. Director Hal Ashby had edited the film while listening to songs by Mona Bone Jakon and Tea for the Tillerman, and was convinced that his film should contain only Cat Stevens material. After an extensive campaign, he was able to get Cat Stevens on board. Seven songs from the two 1970 Island / A&M albums were included in the soundtrack: "On The Road To Find Out," "I Wish, I Wish," "Miles From Nowhere," "Tea for the Tillerman," "I Think I See The Light," "Trouble," and "Where Do The Children Play?" Two tracks not from the album were also included in the mix: "Don't Be Shy" and what became the unofficial theme of the film, "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out." These songs remained unreleased until the 1984 collection Footsteps In The Dark and were later included in the 2001 box On The Road To Find Out.
