Popis
Henderson's brilliant electric and acoustic outing with an incredible band includes pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter (also on electric bass) and drummer Jack DeJohnette. Although the tenor saxophonist received his true recognition later in his career, he made numerous recordings for Milestone, including this third release, which Keepnews says contains "some of the most wonderful and effective professional music I've ever been involved with." The disc includes the first recording of the tenor saxophonist's classic composition, "Black Narcissus." With this mixture of social consciousness, hard bop, jazz-funk and electronic elements, the saxophonist is entering a new creative dimension. Alongside legends such as Herbie Hancock (piano, Fender Rhodes), Ron Carter (electric and acoustic bass), Jack DeJohnette (drums) and Mike Lawrence (trumpet), he plays originals such as "Isotope", "Afro-Centric" and the first recording of his classic "Black Narcissus". Power To The People is the latest title in Jazz Dispensary's acclaimed Top Shelf series and was cut from the original tapes (AAA) by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI. The LP is housed in a gatefold sleeve modeled after the album's original packaging on Milestone Records. Nearly 55 years after its release, Power To The People still sounds as fresh as ever and is a testament to Henderson's talents as a composer, bandleader and saxophonist. In the decades since its release, the album has gone from strength to strength. In retrospective reviews, PopMatters declared the record "a strong reminder of a player who never wavered", while AllMusic noted that the album "has some classic moments".
