Keleketla! is a large collaborative project that spans from Johannesburg to London, Lagos, L.A. and all the way to West Papua. The eponymous album began as a musical meeting point between Coldcut and a cadre of South African musicians, including the raw, South African-influenced jazz stylings of Sibusile Xaba and rapper Yugen Blakrok (of "Black Panther' OST fame). Since those initial sessions, the record grew to include a wider network of musical luminaries, including Afrobeat architects, such as Dele Sosimi and the now late and sorely missed pioneer Tony Allen, L.A. spoken word legends The Watts Prophets and West Papuan activist Benny Wenda. The final product is a forward-thinking compilation of influences that makes connections between various points on a jazz-influenced, soulful spectrum; it builds on the solid musical foundations of those first sessions, with musicians like Thabang Tabane, an esteemed percussionist and son of the legendary Phillip Tabane. On the one hand there are gqom beats interwoven with activist chants and Tony Allen's live afrobeat drums, on the other there are warm, lyrical meditations supported by wind and keyboard instruments. The name 'Keleketla' means 'answer' (as in 'call-and-response') - a title that speaks to the aim of the project: to create a shared musical terrain that will be pursued across different recording sessions and continents.
