"An unsung modernist classic from 1974." - Pitchfork
Bennie Maupin's inventiveness has contributed to iconic records such as Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew", Herbie Hancock's "Mwandishi" and "Headhunters" and Marion Brown's "Afternoon Of A Georgia Faun". Recordings under his own name were rather rare, but his debut as a leader is a gem. "A more selfless album is hard to imagine", wrote Down Beat in 1975. "The sound on 'The Jewel In The Lotus' is outstanding, and all the musicians strive to blend into a single entity". recorded in New York in 1974, the album's personnel overlaps with that of Herbie Hancock's environment at the time, but the music has a character all of its own.
The Luminessence vinyl edition of the album comes in a tip-on gatefold and includes new liner notes.
