In terms of the quantity of his oeuvre, Ernst Eichner should be counted as a minor master: his legacy amounts to several operas of chamber music as well as several collections of symphonic works, which - each comprising six pieces - still add up to around half a hundred and reveal something quite different from a "minor master". Eichner's spirited, colorful and sensitive treatment of the orchestra often appeared to his contemporaries to be an expression of "a tender heart" or "fair grace and melting sweetness", while they were certainly not yet aware that Eichner's creations were (also) developing the form of the symphony, which not much later became the classical measure of all great things
For this production, the European Orchestra Theresia has selected four representative pieces from the considerable catalog, reflecting the stylistic development of the excellent violinist and composer, who first left his hometown of Mannheim for Zweibrücken and finally, after an odyssey, ended up at the court of the Prussian king in Berlin, where he died in 1777 at the age of 37.
