Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez can easily be considered the most Spanish of all compositions. The famous Adagio does not only sound from the church bells of Aranjuez, it has also been widely used in commercials, documentaries and feature films, immediately evoking images of Spain in the listener’s imagination.
The Concierto has also served as the foundation for Miles Davis’s 'Album Sketches of Spain', and was interpreted by artists as diverse as Deep Purple, Chick Corea and Paco de Lucia, reflecting the all-embracing nature of this composition.
'Rodrigo at 90' is an intimate portrait of Spain’s best known composer. At the age of ninety, he has lived a life filled with as much tragedy as joy, but his music has maintained an outlook which is as sunny as the land whence it comes.
The concert recording featured on this disc has gained worldwide attention for being a “reference recording”. Soloist is guitar virtuoso Pepe Romero, a very close personal friend of Rodrigo, who had composed many works for guitar particularly for Romero.
