Isabelle Faust plays Schumann.
For 100 years the musical public knew only two sonatas for violin and piano by Robert Schumann. Then a third Sonata in A minor was published by Schott in London in 1956. A sensational rediscovery? The sensation was limited; yes, until today only a few people have even noticed the existence of this sonata. In 1853 Schumann, together with Brahms and Albert Dietrich, had composed a joint sonata for Joseph Joachim, the so-called F-A-E Sonata, for which he had contributed the second and fourth movements. Only a few days later he composed his own first movement and a scherzo. Joachim was enthusiastic: "The completion of the sonata fits splendidly... of course that is now a different whole! Unfortunately he - together with Clara - revised this judgment after Schumann's death and held the sonata - like the Violin Concerto - back from publication. Since then, the unfortunate verdict on Schumann's late works has remained uninspired, monotonous, marked by his mental illness. Unfortunately, it has also kept first-class soloists from dealing with these jewels - which they really are. That is why I am now particularly proud and happy that one of the most fascinating violinists of the young generation was particularly interested in the 3 Schumann sonatas and has now documented this in a scale interpretation for cpo: Isabelle Faust plays accompanied by Silke Avenhaus.
